The productive vegetable growing in the garden is not the main focus, our community is, but saying that it’s important to show what people’s love and energy in the garden have produced.
This year we have grown around 576 kilos of organic produce compared to 286 kilos last year, more than doubling our food production. This includes 40 kilos of honey!
576 kilos equates to 7195 meals, double last year’s contribution to Capital Growth’s ‘Million Meals for London’ campaign to get people growing. More about this campaign and how ‘meals’ are measured at www.capitalgrowth.org/millionmeals
If you’re wondering what happened to all the vegetables…
Most of the production this year has cultivated seed, like the leeks. Many of the vegetables that we’ve been growing will stay in the ground all winter to either produce seed in their 2nd year, like the parsnips, or keep the garden looking lush like the rainbow chard, which will hopefully be giving us seed too.
This next growing year we’ll be sowing many of our own home grown seeds, beginning very soon with our own garlic cloves. You’ll be able to taste the fruits of our labours from the Spring when the food will be on sale in the garden each Tuesdays and Thursdays 12 to 3pm
Our volunteer days are also Tuesdays and Thursdays. There’s always a lot of work to do even in the winter. Pop in for as long as you want to between 10am and 3pm… hope to see you there.
