March is a traditionally very busy time in the garden as with the coming of spring, the garden starts to come back to life and another exciting growing season begins. We have a lot of work to do but with the new greenhouses and cold frames, we now have a lot more flexibility in what we can grow.
My thanks go to the team who have kept pushing the work schedule along whilst I was on holiday. It’s heartening to me to return with jobs having been completed and moved forward so it proves to me what a great team we have.
We welcome Gudrun Clarke and Christine Mitchel to the volunteering team this month and the wealth of experience and knowledge they bring. Having experienced gardeners on the team who crack in on tasks and complete everything to a high standard is really great for the project and a great boost to the team.
A big thanks to Reg, Steve and Lois for donating tools and equipment recently as they have brought in some excellent kit for us either by buying it or picking it up elsewhere and bearing us in mind. I really appreciate your efforts, team!
Saturday 21st saw the third Big Dig in the garden which also serves as our second anniversary, as it was the Big Dig that kicked off the volunteering part of the project and gives us a look back on just how far we come in such a short time. The weather was awful but we had 12 hardy souls who toiled all day and we completed a number of projects that needed doing including weeding of the fruit cage, digging out one of the cold frames and getting it planted, general maintenance and our own resident ‘Michelangelo’ AKA Kirsty who spent all day upside down stripping the ceiling in the Seetec Kitchen. Thanks to all who came and had such a great day.
We are delighted to have our friends from Seetec back with us from next week and we hope to use them to complete the paths at the top of the garden and relay the paving so we have an uninterrupted walk around the garden and get rid of some of the piles of paving, sand and hard core that are currently stored in this area.
This is a really exciting time and the garden is improving all the time thanks to all your efforts, so let’s push forward and make this the best growing season yet.
